Collection Design
A collection is a range of garments and products that are designed and produced for sale to retailers, presented in a variety of ways, from sketches to technical drawings, fashion illustrations, and catwalk presentations. Collections are usually constructed from a combination of silhouettes, colors and fabrics, with the emphasis varying depending on the designer’s particular aesthetic. Proper planning is necessary for successful collection development, and a series of steps should be followed.
Look for references/inspiration and moodboard development
Through a process of research and investigation, it is possible to find and detect inspirational sources, that can be transformed and developed into new products and designs. Analyzing social and consumer trends, knowing what is happening in the fashion industry and other sectors can be transformed into potential themes and ideas, that will guide and give the collection consistency and a stronger identity.
Sketchbook development
The sketchbook is a notebook that reflects the creative process of the designer. It is a means of expression where ideas are collected and proposals are developed, with the aim of maintaining and coordinating the concept of the collection, the making of the garments, the search for materials and fabrics, and the suggestions of possible looks. It usually includes images and references, sketches, silhouettes, quick total look design, design groups of developments, color, and material proposal.
Collection coordination/collection board and total looks
Through this process it is possible to select the final garments from the sketch development and create total looks, combining them into outfits. This way the coordination of fabrics, colors, shapes, and rhythms of the collection appear more consistent and coherent with the inspiration. A range plan is created.
Collection final presentation
The final presentation of the collection may include outfits illustrations, technical flat drawings of the garments, inspirational pages (moodboard and inspiration charts, and color charts).
The collection design process can be applied to ready-to-wear collections (menswear and womenswear), sportswear, activewear, eveningwear, and uniforms.

Photographic rendering
Fashion illustrations are a way to visualize the collection when it is not realized yet. Garments or the total looks can be presented in a more simple and graphic way, but thanks to digital techniques and software as Procreate and an excellent illustrative ability, it is possible to represent the collection in a photographic and hyper realistic way. This is also a sustainable approach and method: photographic illustrations are useful to clearly imagine the finished garments before proceeding in realizing them. Hyper realistic illustrations may also replace a photo-shooting.
